Tis the season to get less hits!

So Christmas is upon us once again and the same question keeps coming in.

“I’m getting fewer hits to my site. What’s happening?”

Don’t panic! It’s just a seasonal fluctuation. Sure, there’re businesses that get more hits during the festive season but generally we see a decrease in traffic across the board.

We see the same at Easter and over the summer holiday season. So hold tight and don’t worry because January, February and March are just round the corner and are probably the busiest months of the year online.

We've also given all clients free Search Term Placement this Chistmas which will help to get everyone a little boost during this slower period. Simply log in to your control panel and click the "claim offer" link.

Wishing all of our clients and fantastic Christmas break and a profitable New Year!

Knowledge base launched

We are proud to announce the launch of our brand new knowledge base.

This will allow all existing and potential clients to view product information in much greater detail. Most articles are available for anyone to view but a few more lucrative insights are exclusive to our paying clients.

We will be constantly adding and editing the knowledge base so be sure to check back regularly.

Link exposure launched

Continuous investment in ingenuity drives our business, which is why once again in reaction to the way the market is moving we have launched yet another market breakthrough product.

We've been working incredibly hard over the last few months in reaction to the last batch of updates by Google. It allows all of our existing and potential new clients to beneft from a link strategy that will work now and most crucially future proof against any updates Google may decide to make over the months and years ahead. It's called link exposure.

Link exposure, previously known as link building, is generally considered the most important on-going part of an SEO campaign. Your ranking across all the major search engines is based on the number of other websites that link back to your site. These are called backlinks, and the more backlinks your site has, the higher it will be ranked. Link exposure is 100% white hat because our partner webmasters will only place a back link if they feel a site has relevance, and crucially they’re not obligated to place any link. This combined with the frequency that we aim for of between 100 and 300 back links every 3 months, means you have no chance of being penalized by any search engine now or in the future.

For more information why not check out our knowledge base article about link exposure.

Negative SEO alert system launched

There are various off site factors that can have an impact on your ranking. These include:

  • Rapid backlink growth. Up or down.
  • Rapid Facebook likes. Up or down.
  • Rapid Twitter followers. Up or down.

Or course the issue with your off site factors are that they (to an extent) are out of your control. This therefore opens the door on someone potentially running a negative SEO campaign against your site. We have recently seen a few examples of this and therefore decided to release a product in reaction called the negative SEO alert system.

This unique system checks for dramatic increases and decreases in your back links, Facebook likes and Twitter followers making sure that if your site comes under attack, we recognize the signs early and fend against any drop in ranking.

For any more information on this or any of our other product please check out our knowledge base or get in touch.

Breaking news! Panda 3.0 and the death of iFrames

This is a very quick blog update to keep all of our clients up to speed with the latest developments with the Panda 3.0 roll out.

<iFrame>

Panda 3.0 has been labelled as an anti-spam driven roll out and we're seeing signs that this is true.

Due to the unique size of our client base we're able to see trends fast and one that we have picked up on over the last few days is iFramed content. Google are seeing iFrames as potential spam for 3 reasons:

1. You, the webmaster has no control over its content.
2. Google cannot see what's in an iFrame.
3. It could be classed as duplicate content.

We've seen the main reason for iFrames is to display a Twitter, Facebook or Trustpilot feed on home page.

So, get removing those iFrames people!

Google Releases Penguin 3.0. The First Penguin Update In Over A Year

Google confirms that a new version of its Penguin filter aimed at fighting spam went live on Friday

Google has confirmed that it updated its Penguin filter on Friday. Penguin targets sites deemed to be spammy.

Some noticed major changes in Google search results beginning late Friday night and speculated that this was due to the long-awaited Penguin Update that Google had said to expect this month.

Google verified today that this has happened. Google hasn’t yet given more details on the percentage of search results the latest version of Penguin has impacted or if there were any major changes made to it since the last release.

In terms of the impact to our clients. We have see the usual mix of clients seeing a ranking uplift with a few seeing a ranking decrease. The main reason for any decreases seems to be down to on-site relevance, with clients who followed the on-site relevance changes that we suggest during sign up seeing excellent results.

If you are a client and concerned about this latest update please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Video, the boss of all testimonials!

One of the greatest challenges facing any business that's got a great product is “getting the word out there”!

A great way to do this is by getting testimonials. However, the internet has become littered with fake testimonials on dodgy websites, especially in the SEO industry! The way we get around this is to make sure that all of our 165+ testimonials has a link to the client’s website and often we get potential clients touching base with existing clients to verify that a testimonial is still valid. However, we have now gone one step further.

Whenever someone gives us a testimonial we now ask them (if they have time) to send a video, and we can’t believe the results!

Testimonial from Kenneth Lambert at www.lowcostbusinesssuppliers.co.uk

It’s great to see how far people will go to shout about a product that they find works and represents good value. It helps promote their business and is such a powerful message to our potential clients.

Testimonial from Oliver and Stephen at www.tvwhenaway.co.uk

With the advent of smart phones, shooting a quick video has never been easier, and we would recommend any consumer facing business to encourage (wherever possible) their clients to do the same.

Testimonial from Matthew at www.vapourator.com

We get at least one testimonial a day relating to some, or all of our our products and services. Therefore, we hope to gain over the months a years ahead lots more videos as we strive to create the perfect digitial marketing service at the lowest possible cost.

Testimonial from Adam Sutherland at www.myhouseadvert.co.uk

If you’re an existing Click Submit client and would like to send us video testimonial just record it and send to: support@clicksubmit.co.uk.

Thanks so much for reading this article and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Google announce ranking boost to sites with SSL

We’ve got great news following Google's announcement to give ranking boosts to secure HTTPS/SSL sites!

So, not only are they offering Click Submit clients free hosting for 12 months on their SEO safe platform but, they’re also offering a great discount on SSL certificates too. It goes to show how switched on Cloud Next are when it comes to the SEO benefits of web hosting and why we continue to recommend them to our clients.

Market breakthrough. Positivity launched!

In our "rankutation" blog back in April we wrote about how we were finding peoples online reputation becoming an important part of the search engines ranking algorithm. We've reacted to this by developing a brand new, totally unique product and it's called Positivity.

Positivity is a system which allows you to verify whether a client is happy or not before you suggest that they submit a review via a public website like Trust Pilot, Review Center, Trip Adviser etc.

During set up you will be able to create up to 5 questions that your clients will mark you out of 5 on via our white labelled client feedback site www.feedingback.co.uk. You will then be able to set a positive threshold. This threshold will dictate the message they see after they submit their feedback. So for example you may set a threshold of 4 stars of above. This would mean that anyone who averages 4 stars or above would then be asked to submit a public review. If they average 3 stars of below they would be presented with a message that you create during set up.

By using this product, over time, you'll generate an overwhelmingly positive score on your chosen review channels which can have a dramatic impact on your rankings and conversion rate.

Is link building dead? Short answer, NO!

A recent article on the Guardian UK website claims that link building is dead and it’s all about content and social media. This theory is then re-enforced by several “expert” marketing agencies re-enforcing this view.

We totally agree that social signals, blogging, content and reviews are becoming more and more important which is why we’ve already launched like to follow and are about to launch a new product positivity (at no additional cost), but to say link building's dead is crazy!

In our opinion link building is still the most important part of your off-site SEO campaign but must be done at the right pace and in conjunction with the on-site relevance work that we recommend. See our 3 step strategy.

If you require any further details on this or any of our cutting edge products don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can now make the on-site SEO changes

Within every clients initial report there are some critical changes that we require you to make to your site. These changes give your site relevance to your search terms and are absolutely critical in order to maximize the impact of the back links we build for you, which are centered around these search terms.

We often see a situation where a client has a good number of back links and the minute we improve the relevance on-site within a few weeks (after Google re-indexes the site) they pop on to the first page of Google and never look back.

These changes should take either yourself or your web developer no longer than an hour to complete. However, if you prefer, for a one off fee of just £49.99, we can now carry out these changes for you. As with every service we launch costs have been kept to a minimum, hence the low one off cost. This option is called the "managed on-site changes" and can be ordered via the client control panel.

If you have any questions please get in touch.

Over 415,000 likes and follows exchanged!

You may already be aware that we publish all of our system stats. We believe in transparency and therefore publish and refresh our site wide stats on a 24 hour basis.

This statistic shows how many times our users (that are opted in to like to follow) have liked and followed each other via Twitter and Facebook. When we first started reporting these stats we were blown away. We knew that it was a popular system but had no idea how popular it had become.

Since launch our cients have exchanged over 415,000 likes and follows with over 1,500 now being exchanged everyday!

The key to its popularity is the way it's offered. You don't have to like and follow everyone. You choose to like and follow, or remove a site from the list. This means the system does not breach any of the rules set by Facebook / Twitter in the way you gain likes and follows. That means the likes and follows are highly regarded because they are from other vibrant socially active businesses and individuals, and the best bit...

Like to follow is included for free as part of our core SEO product!

We've saved our clients over £19 million in 5 years!

When we launched Click Submit back in 2009 lots of people doubted that SEO could be done for such a low price but through a huge initial and on-going investment in ingenuity we did it. Now our 3,500+ client base are benefiting from a product and service that matches up to even our most expensive competitors.

Taking our competitions average price of £499.99 per month and comparing that to our price of £49.99 per quarter (for fairness including the managed on-site changes at a one off cost of £49.99) the average annual saving our clients make is £5,749.93.

This means that across our entire network we’ve saved our clients over £19,791,259!

Managed SEO on-site changes launched

When we launched Click Submit back in 2009 we made three ground breaking decisions.

The first was to put the emphasis for the simple on-site changes required to the client. We let our clients know what they need to change on their site then it’s up to them or their web developer to make these changes.

The second was to invest over £250,000 ($400,000) in to a unique way of link building that streamlines the process without any detriment to the quality of the backlinks.

The third was the most important. We decided to pass these cost savings on to our clients.

We listen to our clients and in doing so noticed we were regularly getting asked if we were able to make the recommended on-site changes for them? As a result of this feedback we have decided to launch a new “managed on-site changes” option.

For a one off fee of just £49.99 in VAT we can now do the on-site changes that we recommend. As with every product we launch we’ve kept costs to an absolute minimum hence the low one off cost.

This new option also gives our white label resellers further flexibility when deciding on their product offering.

Over the next week we will be allowing clients to order this new option via their control panel but in the meantime if you would like to take advantage of this new product simply get in touch and we will get everything set up for you.

The 4 golden SEO rules when updating your website

A question we get asked a lot is, “if we're updating our site will this affect our SEO?” the answer is generally no but there are some pit falls you must avoid.

1. Make sure the URLs stay the same. Sometimes it's tempting to change the URL structure of your site in order to make things more organised. For example maybe you have a URL like www.yourdomain.com/product -101 which has a high ranking on the search term “product 101”. If you change the URL to www.yourdomain.com/product-1 then that page would almost immediately drop off Google, your traffic will decrease and you’ll be wondering what’s happened. Sometimes people think a way around this is to 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. This can work but Google can sometimes ignore 301 redirects. Another thing to watch out for are site builders that automatically alter your URLs when you change the page title of a page.

2. Make sure your Meta Data stays the same. Sometimes when you update a site the Meta Data, and in particular your pages titles can change. An example that we've seen many times is where someone's updated their website and after the new site goes live the home page title is simply set to “Home”( See our previous “home is not where your site lives” article). This generally comes about where web design companies are so design led that they ignore critical SEO based continuity when updating a sites design.

3. Pain text content. Make sure that the plain text based content that’s on your existing site is replicated on the new site. So often we’ve see people update their site for a more image heavily “less is more” approach. From a humans perspective these sites can look great, however the search engines are not human. It’s therefore important to make sure that the great looking design sits alongside relevant text based content that the search engines can see and appreciate.

4. The forth rule is easy. Don’t use flash!

We hope you found this article useful and if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Panda 4.0 and a bad week for Ebay!

Yesterday Google rolled out their latest Panda update and early indications are very positive for our clients.

We’ve seen a general uplift in rankings across all campaigns since the roll out and we think we know why.

The main talking point has been the impact on large networks that eat up virtually every sector related search term. An example of this is Ebay who were yesterday reportedly seeing a decrease in organic traffic of up to 50%!

Although it’s early days it would appear that for our clients it's generally good news. Our price point means we attract small and medium sized businesses that have been positively affected by this update.

We will continue to monitor this across our network of over 3,500 live SEO campaigns and update this post accordingly over the coming days.

SEO. The 4 most important elements to getting a page 1 result.

A question we get asked a lot is; how long will it take to get to page one on Google? This is a very difficult question to answer because it’s very specific to the site and how competitive the search term is. Generally we’re able to predict how long it will take based on the number of words and how geographical the search term is but it’s still very hard to be 100% accurate.

May factors make the difference between sites that succeed with their SEO and those that don’t but here are the most common factors in a sites ultimate success.

1. Making the on-site changes. It’s critical that after you’ve signed up you make the recommended on-site changes. These are located both within your report and via the SEO analyser. You need to achieve a relevance rating of over 75 out of 100. The sooner these changes are made, the sooner the search engines will appreciate your relevance for your chosen search terms.

2. Allow the backlinks to get indexed. It can take between 3 and 9 months for the back links that we build to show up on any checker. The way in which we request your back links and then our partner webmasters place them is totally white hat, but can take a little bit of time to take effect.

3. Social awareness. The search engines are focusing more on social signals and in particular how many likes and follows you have. They’re also looking at the quality of the likes and follows you have. Our like to follow system will help you achieve this and is totally unique in the market.

4. Patience. This is the most key element. The work we do takes time to have an impact. Generally the Google results are based on who sticks out their strategy the longest. Don’t get us wrong, we do get clients all the time that see good results after just a few weeks but on average it takes between 3 and 9 months to see noticeable impact. The reason for this is just down to how competitive your search term is. Good results are always achievable but it can just take a bit of time for certain search terms.

Our quarterly service is built around these and lots of other more technical elements that we see becoming more important to rankings. We’re constantly investing in new products that you can benefit from at no additional cost in order to take advantage of these factors.

We hope you found this article interesting and if you have any questions relating to our services feel free to get in touch.

Seasonal traffic fluctuations

We often get back in to the office after bank holidays to e-mails from panicked clients saying that their hits have dropped dramatically and they don’t know why.

With the Easter weekend upon us we thought it would be a good time to approach the subject of traffic fluctuations. We’ve done some research across all of our SEO and Adwords campaigns analysing click data in order to produce one of the first definitive guides to how the holiday season affects traffic.

While there are certain sites that will attract more traffic over a weekend or holiday weekend, generally traffic is lower. Over the Christmas period we saw a decrease in traffic over 31.2% across our 3,000 plus clients. We will monitor and update this post after the Easter holidays to see how this period compares with Christmas.

In terms of other factors that affect traffic. Major sporting events can have an impact so it will be interesting to monitor things over the upcoming world cup. We will certainly blog about this when the time comes.
It makes for interesting reading and gives you a small insight in to one of many factors we are able to monitor due to the size of our client base.

Hope you found this interesting and from everyone at Click Submit... Happy Easter!

Rankutation!

Everyone's always trying to second guess the search engines in order to position themselves higher and outfox the competition. There are many factors that we see are important but an area that we're starting to see some great movement is reputation. The search engines and in particular Google are staring to place an increasing amount of significance on reputation.

The reason for this is firstly, they see review sites as a possible threat to their search. So, bringing an element of reputation to a Google users experience would negate their need to search a review site directly and therefore put out a potential long term threat from the review sites.

We know that if you get over 40 reviews within a 12 month period on either trust pilot or the review centre then Google will show your star rating on your search listing.

What we also know is that click through rate (CTR) is not just important for Adwords but it’s also a factor on the natural rankings, if your listing has a star rating then your CTR will improve. Therefore, your reputation can have a direct impact on your natural rankings.
If you're a user of Adwords of course the star rating will also improve the CTR on your Ad thus driving down the cost per click, which is good news!

So, a good reputation is key. Real clients giving real feedback but how can you fend against bad reviews? We have the solution. We’re currently developing a new product called ‘positivity’ which we’re looking to roll it out over the summer, and the best bit? It will be available to our clients at no additional cost!

The secret heartbeat of Google and the diversification of its product base

If you search Google news on the keyword ‘SEO’ the internet is full of so called experts second guessing what they think ranks you better, while also making sweeping statements about what Google thinks is bad.

Google is a very rare beast, a publicly owned company with a secret algorithm at its core. A secret that can make or break business and personal reputations.

So, how can a public company that influences so much be allowed to keep this a secret?

Google has the ultimate power but it’s also the ultimate democracy. People give them power by using their search but if they were to start abusing that power than in theory people could start using other services. So a competitive search environment is important in order to self-regulate the industry.

Google's come under fire recently for being to ‘big brotherish’ but as the pressure grows to continue their financial growth they may push their users too far and that could lead to their eventual downfall.

Our opinion is that Google understand the feeling in terms of user’s privacy and are therefore looking at diversification as a route to growth by moving in to operating systems and software. This diversification also increases peoples dependence on Google and ups the migration pain to almost unbearable. Although Apple is king of this tactic Google are now a close second.

Whatever the future holds one thing is for sure, Google aren't going anywhere and neither are we! While the market second guesses what Google are doing we’re able to see more clearly what’s going on due to the high volume of active campaigns we’re operating.

We recently celebrated our 3,000th active client, this enables us to monitor trends, then based on that data we engineer new unique products that help direct traffic to a website. Our quarterly service, charged at just £49.99 allows you to lock in these and any future products that we launch.

Hope you've enjoyed this article and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The suffix algorithm

So, over the last few weeks a number of new domain suffixes have been released. These include some really weird and wonderful options. Here are a few examples:

.lighting
.equipment
.tips
.photos
.graphics
.gallery
.photography
.today
.technology
.directory
.sexy

There are many more but you get the picture. So, is there any SEO advantage or disadvantage of using one of these domains and is there generally an advantage to using one suffix ahead of another?

At Click Submit we have over 3,500 live SEO campaigns and this puts us in a fairly unique position. It allows us to monitor ranking trends more than any other SEO company and therefore we can draw a fairly informed conclusion.

In our opinion the answer is a resounding yes! The suffix does have an impact. We definitely see a benefit in using a .co.uk if you're operating in the UK and we certainly see that the best all round performer is the .com. Google holds historical importance to a suffix and because these suffixes have been around for longer, they prefer sites that have them over ones that do not.

The obvious pit fall to this data was that in general .com and .co.uk domains have sites on them that have been around for longer. So, in order to confirm our suspicion we looked for campaigns that were similar in age, market sector and backlink profile. The results were always the same. The older suffixes outperformed the new ones.

In our opinion if you can, try to find a domain with a .co.uk suffix within the UK and a .com or .net within the USA and go for the newer suffixes as a last resort. If you're operating in any other country then always go for the most historical geographical suffix for that location.

I hope you found this useful and whether you are an existing or potential Click Submit client please don’t be afraid to get in touch if you have any questions about this or anything else!

Trail content is becoming the new king!

Since the last round of updates by Google, more emphasis has been placed on content. Although there's no doubt that back links are still very important they must now be complemented with good quality content, or as we like to call it trail content. We have been advising all clients to add trail content within their first and quarterly reports for about the last 2 years and that's now really paying off!

What is trail content?

Trail content is a virtual depth of knowledge, it's a way of creating pages of text based information for each of your search terms with a link to each one of these pages from your home page. It creates the perception of depth of content to the search engines and therefore improves your relevance score.

How to create trail content

It’s easy and purely text based. For example, one of our clients is called www.tvwhenaway.co.uk. One of their search terms is “Watch iPlayer Outside the UK”, they have therefore created a page on their website called “Watch iPlayer Outside the UK” with some general content on it. It also needs to have a page title that matches the search term.

Then they’ve added a link to this page from the most relevant pages on their website.

This may not be possible for all of your search terms, but where you have a search term that you could write some content about, it can be of great benefit.

As you can see from our example, they are now appearing on page one of Google for this search term.

Ranking checker warning!

We’ve been noticing over the last few months an increasing trend of ranking checkers giving incorrect results.

Clients have been contacting us thinking that they’re ranking has dropped off and some that have even been told that their site has been de-indexed.

After investigation we quickly established that their ranking had not moved or in most cases had actually improved. The way we checked this was to simply perform a manual ranking check.

We have for over a year now not reported on ranking. This was for two reasons. Firstly, due to our price point we are not able to manually check rankings for all of our clients and secondly, it’s good practice for clients to check their ranking independently.

So why are ranking checkers not accurate?

To answer this first we have to address how they work. When you type in a search term against a URL a ranking checker will ping the search engines, doing automatically what we all do manually. It will search page 1, page 2, page 3 and so on until it locates your listing and then when it finds your listing it will report back to you. So what’s the problem? The issue is twofold:

1. Google do not like this practice as it creates additional bandwidth requirements across their network. So, if they see an IP address doing it a lot they may block it for a period of time from searching Google. This is when a ranking checker may report that a URL is not indexed, leading people to think they have been de-indexed when they have not.

2. Google are trying more and more to tailor search results based on an individual users browsing habits. So, if you are searching for the same search term continuously but not clicking on any links Google will presume that you’re not finding what you want, then on future searches it will mix up the search results in order to try and connect you with what you are looking for. This results in users thinking their site has dropped in ranking. Clearing your cache before each ranking check will resolve this.

So, what is the solution?

If you still want to use an automatic checker our advice would be to perform a maximum of one ranking check per week making sure you clear your cache beforehand. Otherwise, our suggestion to see true results is to clear your cache and then perform a manual check.
